French Election 2024 Second Round

French Legislative Elections 2024: Results and Analysis

Second-Round Results and Map

On Sunday, July 7, 2024, France held the second round of its legislative elections. The results showed a significant gain for left-wing parties, a setback for President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance, and a surge in support for the far-right.

577 Members Elected to National Assembly

The 577 members of the National Assembly were elected in two rounds. In the first round, held on June 12, no party secured an absolute majority. In the second round, the left-wing New Popular Front (NUPES) emerged as the largest group in the assembly, with 158 seats. Macron's Together! alliance won 140 seats, while the far-right National Rally gained 89 seats.

Left-wing Surge, Macron Setback

The NUPES alliance, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, benefited from a strong performance in the first round and gained additional support in the second. This result marks a significant shift in French politics, with the left-wing bloc becoming the largest in the National Assembly for the first time in decades. In contrast, Macron's Together! alliance lost ground in both rounds of the elections. The president's centrist agenda has faced criticism from both the left and right, and the results suggest a decline in his popularity.

Rise of the Far-Right

The National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, made significant gains in the legislative elections. The far-right party's anti-immigration and Eurosceptic message resonated with voters, especially in rural areas. Le Pen's party is now the third-largest group in the National Assembly, with 89 seats.

High Turnout and Potential Consequences

Turnout for the second round of the elections was high, with over 50% of registered voters casting ballots. This suggests a strong interest in the outcome of the elections and could have implications for the stability of the French government. The formation of a stable ruling coalition will be a challenge given the fragmented nature of the National Assembly. The NUPES alliance and Together! alliance could potentially form a coalition, but significant policy differences would need to be overcome. Alternatively, Macron could attempt to form a minority government or seek support from the National Rally, but such a move would be controversial.
