A former member of the Royals' championship staff, Grifol is taking over a team that has high hopes for the future.

Grifol was introduced to the media on Thursday and said he's excited to get started with his new team.

The Chicago White Sox have hired Pedro Grifol as their new manager, the team announced Thursday. Grifol, 53, spent the past nine seasons as a coach with the Kansas City Royals, including the last three as bench coach.

Grifol was a member of the Royals' 2015 World Series championship team and their 2014 and 2015 American League pennant-winning teams. He has a reputation as a good communicator and a strong leader.

"Pedro is a proven winner who knows how to build a strong team culture," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. "He is a great communicator and a tireless worker, and we are confident that he will help us achieve our goals."

Grifol said he's excited to get started with his new team. He said he's confident that the White Sox have the potential to be a contender.

"I'm excited to be a part of this organization," Grifol said. "I believe in this team and I believe in this city."
